United States Medical Department

The IPCRESS File

The United States Medical Department has a brief but consequential place in the narrator’s account of the Tokwe affair: two men in Jay’s network were working for it, and their conflicting claims about the narrator’s custody helped set the stage for Jay to take control of his return to the United Kingdom.

Identification

The narrator uses the abbreviation USMD when recounting the two men’s role, then expands it in a footnote as United States Medical Department. The account identifies their connection to the department but gives no further description of its structure, remit, or involvement in the events on Tokwe.

Role in the Custody Confusion

After Dalby’s scheme had implicated the narrator, the two men conveyed opposing accounts across the British and American sides: British authorities were told that the Americans were holding the narrator, while the Americans were told that the British had requested his return. The narrative presents these messages as the circumstances immediately preceding Jay’s intervention, without specifying who authorized them or what the two men intended.

Jay then took over and brought the narrator into the United Kingdom as a hospital case. The United States Medical Department’s significance in this episode is therefore indirect: its connection to the two intermediaries places it within the competing accounts of custody, while the narrator assigns the decisive next move to Jay.
